Philosophy
We are dedicated to design and client service, balancing our commitment to unique design with our commitment to accommodating each client’s lifestyle and needs.
Our designs grow from a specific sense of place. Organizing each project to celebrate the strengths of its site, ranging from sun exposure to views to water’s edge, we develop our architecture to capitalize on these assets while creating inside spaces that are comfortable yet exceptional experiences for our clients. We consider ourselves to be problem-solvers, reconciling the constraints of lifestyle, budget, and site, while staying true to our design philosophy.
Our client service reflects our commitment to give each client particular attention. We are committed to listen and to respond, throughout the design process, and beyond.
Perspectives
A former client really wanted to categorize me throughout a job. What type of architect are you? Are you a traditionalist, a modernist? At the end of the job, he declared me a Humanist, saying “You are always thinking about how it was to use the spaces, where did I want to read the Sunday paper, what do the handrails feel like, how is this going to work for the family?” This Humanist label got me thinking about how I might use this descriptor to help characterize to others who I am and how I work. We are always focused on keeping intimate spaces as part of the program, even in large projects. How materials feel, how light fills the space, how procession works as one moves through the project are all part of our checklist to keep things on a par with the rest of our work.
Another key component of how I work is a philosophy I call “pull the thorn”. All projects start with constraints, most of which we have to accept. Sometimes we discover that one of the constraints is derailing the design process, keeping us from achieving a great solution. When we present the design freed from that constraint, the universal reaction is “this is so simple and clear!” That is pulling the thorn!
